02 Sep David Joyner
An inability to sit still and a love of animals began David’s journey through art. An awkward kid with awful handwriting, he was made fun of constantly. However, the worse his penmanship became, the better his drawing ability became. He began by reproducing other artist’s drawings, then it dawned on him to attempt one of his own from a photograph. It worked! He gradually gained more confidence, advancing to portraits and more difficult animals. He taught himself through books and the internet but mainly through a lot of mistakes, erasers were his friend.
He grew to love a white sheet of sketch paper and a sharpened pencil. Anything is possible in that world, his mother taught him this. No matter what happened in life, he would always be safe at his drawing table. His handwriting is still illegible, and he has continued to learn his art through stray pencil marks, hand cramps, and spilled paint. To this day, he is still amazed at a white sheet of paper.
David lives in Okeechobee, Florida with his beautiful wife Sally, Olivia, 13 and, Bradley, 19. He owes this all to his mother who told an 8-year-old boy who believes could draw.
